East Mecklenburg High School

East Mecklenburg High School, better known as East Meck, is a public high school within the Charlotte Mecklenburg School System that services the southeastern central area of Mecklenburg County. Located at 6800 Monroe Road, Charlotte, NC 28212, the school is the primary high school for the neighborhood of Stonehaven and parts of Idlewild South. Its location is sandwiched between the districts of Garinger, Myers Park, Providence, and Butler High Schools. Established in 1950, it is home to 2,141 students and 118 faculty. The school’s mascot is the Eagles.

 
 

Location

East Meck is located along Monroe Rd within the neighborhood of East Forest. This is one of the older neighborhoods in Charlotte and was developed to feel heavily suburban. Almost the entire area is full of single-family homes built from the 1950s - 1970s. As of 2023, the median Household Income for East Forest Zip of 28212 was $49,570. The median sales price for homes in the East Forest area was $303,333 in September 2023, one of the lower price points in Charlotte. The neighborhood is home to McAlpine Creek Park which has a greenway and a large pond for fishing. Shopping in this area consists of mostly auto dealers. Nissan, Acura, and Land Rover are just a few manufacturers with dealerships in this area. East Forest is accessed primarily via East Independence Blvd and Monroe Rd which both provide quick transportation to Matthews and Uptown Charlotte. Idlewild Rd and North Sharon Amity also allow access to Southpark and Mint Hill respectively. This neighborhood also plans to host several stops along the LYNX Silver Line.

Academics

East Mecklenburg High School services grades 9-12 and is considered a middle-tier school for the Charlotte area. According to GreatSchools, 81% of all students graduated within 4 years compared to the NC State average of 86%. 96% of graduates also went on to attend public university for at least 2 years. This puts East Meck in an interesting position when it comes to college readiness. While the 4-year graduation lags behind both the state and national average, those who do go on to university seem to do quite well. The school offers 16 AP courses, 2 STEM program, 1 Art, and 1 World Language course. Test scores for East Meck are at or above its CMS, State, and National counters. The only subject that seemed to be behind in the 2023 graduating class for 2023 was the English section of the ACT. Here the average student scored 2.7% below the national average. East Meck was behind in scores relating to Math 1 and Biology, where they were 16% and 1% behind the state average respectively. As of 2023, there are 118 teachers at East Mecklenburg High, resulting in the school having a Student / Teacher Ratio of 18-1.

East Meck students closely outperformed their CMS and State counterparts when preparing for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) in 2023. According to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NC DPI), students outperformed fellow CMS and State examinees in the Reading section, but tide the average in Math. They did however outscore the State and National average in these areas. This information points to the school being average when preparing students for higher education in North Carolina. The SAT participation rate for the school was 22.30% which was below the remainder of their CMS peers.

East Meck students were better prepared for the Aptitude and Critical Thinking test (ACT). Average 2023 scores for English, Math, Reading, and Science all above those of their CMS and State counterparts. However, they were outscored by the average National student in the English and Reading sections.

The Graduation Rate at East Mecklenburg High School has fluctuated over the last six years. The school seemed to have persevered through the COVID-19 pandemic until the class of 2022, which experienced a large decrease in the overall graduation rate to 77.1%. East Meck students made better progress in 2023 at 81.1% but it is clear the school is still dealing with the fallout from the pandemic.


Food Assistance Programs

East Meck, as well as all CMS schools, provides meals for underprivileged students via the CMS School Nutrition Services system. This service provides both breakfast and lunch options to students across Mecklenburg County. According to Mecklenburg County Public Health, approximately 15% of households are food insecure, so this program is a welcome addition to East Meck’s cafeteria.
