Hickory Grove Christian School, also known as HGCS, is a private high school located within the Hickory Grove neighborhood of Charlotte. Founded in 1995, the school services grades K-12 and is known for its excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts. HGCS is a ministry of the Hickory Grove Baptist Church, and as such has many courses discussing theology. The school prides itself on its educational prestige and its students often go on to attend accredited universities following graduation. The school is represented by the colors navy and gold, and its mascot is the Lions.

Sandwiched between the Eastland and Farm Pond neighborhoods, the area is home to several residential subdivisions built primarily in the 1950s-1970s. Hickory Grove students were decently prepared for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) in 2023. According to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NC DPI) and other private school reporting, HGCS students outperformed the composite National average by about 100 points. Students did however lag behind their State, CMS, and fellow Private school counterparts. The SAT participation rate for the school was 100%.

Hickory Grove students were well prepared for the Aptitude and Critical Thinking test (ACT). Average 2023 composite scores outperformed average CMS, State, and National high school scores by at least 0.7 points. HGCS students did come in lower than their fellow Charlotte private schools by 9.3 points (29).


Athletics

Hickory Grove Christian School participates in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) and has seen success at the state level. The school has won a total of 9 championships across 28 sports teams. Facilities include an indoor gymnasium for basketball and volleyball, and outdoor stadiums for baseball and football/soccer.


Arts

Hickory Grove emphasizes the arts that not many other schools in the area can measure up to. Students may choose from 7 different fields to use as a creative outlet to express themselves. These include a Concert or Jazz band, Musical Theater, Theater, Technical Theater, Choir, Visual Arts, and Student Media or Yearbook. During the school year, students put on many different concerts, plays, and musicals, and every student is required to partake in programs emphasizing the arts. Hickory Grove encourages expression through the arts to help its students grow not just in an academic sense but in a creative way as well.
