Carmel Christian School is a private high school located within the town of Matthews in southeast Charlotte. Founded in 1993, the school services grades K-12 and is known for its excellence in academics, athletics, and the arts. Carmel Christian is a ministry of the Carmel Baptist Church and has several courses discussing theology. The school prides itself on its educational prestige and its students often go on to attend accredited universities following graduation. The school is represented by the colors navy, white, and gold, and its mascot is the Cougars.

Carmel Christian School is located within the town of Matthews, NC which is one of the more developed submarkets of Charlotte. Matthews is on the edge of Mecklenburg County with Union County to the east. The town is quintessential Charlotte suburbia and has many large neighborhoods. As of 2023, the median Household Income for Matthews Zip of 28105 was $96,204. The median sales price for homes in the Matthews area was $481,667 in September 2023. The neighborhood has several luxurious country clubs and even a large sportsplex for recreational sports. Matthews is also a very popular destination for shoppers. Costco, Lowes, Best Buy, and other large retail chains have stores in the area. Matthews is accessed via I-485, Matthews-Mint Hill Road, and East Independence Blvd which provide quick transportation to Pineville, Mint Hill, and Uptown Charlotte respectively. There are plans to provide public transportation in the form of the LYNX Silver Line, but that project has incurred scheduling delays.
Academics
Carmel Christian services grades K-12 and is considered a fantastic school as far as academics go for the Charlotte area. CD reports a 100% graduation rate among its seniors and almost all go on to attend 4-year higher education programs. These statistics put the school well above the average North Carolina public school, where on average 86% of seniors received their diplomas. The school also offers 14 Advanced Placement (AP)/International Baccalaureate (IB) courses, 1 world language, and several arts courses. As of 2023, there are 217 teachers at Carmel Christian, resulting in the school having a Student / Teacher Ratio of 11-1.
Test Scores
Average SAT Test Scores: 2022-2023
Carmel Christian students were well prepared for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) in 2023. According to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NC DPI), as well as other private school reporting, CD students outperformed their Charlotte public school counterparts as well as the State and National average. They did however fall slightly below their fellow Charlotte Private Schools. Regardless, this information still points to the school excelling in preparing students for higher education. The SAT participation rate for the school was 100%.
Average ACT Test Scores: 2022-2023
Carmel students were also well prepared for the Aptitude and Critical Thinking test (ACT). Average 2023 composite scores outperformed average CMS, State, and National high school scores by at least 9 points. Students did lag behind their fellow Charlotte private schools by 1 point (29).
Athletics
Carmel Christian School participates in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) and has seen much success at the state level. The school has won multiple state championships across 27 sports teams, its most recent being in boys basketball. The school has a multipurpose gym as well as a baseball stadium and batting cages on campus.
Arts
Carmel Christian School puts a heavy emphasis on the arts and worship that is hard to match. During the school year, students have an opportunity to participate in one of 10 theatrical courses covering everything from Technical Theater to Band. These classes allow students to explore their passions and express themselves in ways that would be unachievable elsewhere. Through these classes, students are encouraged to participate in any of the 5 dedicated performances Carmel puts on each year.
