Providence Day School, also known as PD, is a private high school located within the Lansdowne neighborhood of Charlotte. Founded in 1970, the school services grades K-12 and is known for its excellence in both academics and athletics. Several notable alumni walked the halls of Providence Day including former presidential aide Reggie Love, olympian Anna Cockrell, and NFL offensive tackle Ikem Ekwonu. The school prides itself on its educational diversity and its students often go on to attend accredited universities following graduation. The school is represented by the colors red, white, and navy blue, and its mascot is the Chargers.

Providence Day School is located within the Lansdowne neighborhood of south Charlotte. Sandwiched between the neighborhoods of Olde Providence and Stonehaven, the area is home to several residential subdivisions built primarily in the 1960s. This neighborhood is also home to the Levine Jewish Community Center and the Strawberry Hill Shopping Center. McAlpine Creek and James Boyce Park also border the neighborhood and provide residents with several green spaces and walking trails. Providence Day services grades K-12 and is considered a fantastic school as far as academics go for the Charlotte area. PD reports a 100% graduation rate among its seniors and almost all go on to attend 4-year higher education programs. These statistics put the school well above the average North Carolina public school, where on average 86% of seniors received their diplomas. The school also offers 28 AP courses, 3 STEM courses, 6 world languages, and several arts courses. Providence Day students were well prepared for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) in 2023. According to the North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NC DPI), as well as other private school reporting, PD students outperformed their Charlotte private and public school counterparts as well as the State and National average. This information points to the school excelling in preparing students for higher education. The SAT participation rate for the school was 100%.

Providence Day students were also well prepared for the Aptitude and Critical Thinking test (ACT). Average 2023 composite scores outperformed average CMS, State, and National high school scores by at least 9 points (19). PD students did come in just 1 point shy of the average for Charlotte private schools (29).


Athletics

Providence Day School participates in the North Carolina Independent Schools Athletic Association (NCISAA) and has seen much success at the state level. The school has won a total of 108 championships across 19 sports. Training and sports facilities are top-notch at PD and the school grounds are dotted with several sporting arenas, practice tennis courts, and even batting cages. The school has some of the best sporting amenities in the Charlotte area so it’s easy to see why the Chargers routinely compete for State Championships.


Arts

Providence Day encourages its students to explore their passions in the arts and theater. The school has several different courses catering to areas of the arts and puts on several plays each year. The area of visual arts is also explored by many PD students as faculty push students to express themselves through painting, sculpting, and other art forms.
